Well, the new Star Wars Episode IX trailer The Rise of Skywalker dropped today and at only two minutes and four seconds, I found 5 lessons on digital transformation that we can extract from this micro-story of what to expect next. Watch the trailer first then read the post where I extract lessons, then watch it one more time at the end and see if you see the lessons and how it changed the way you saw it. Here you go.

We’ve Passed On All We Know
Business Intelligence (BI), is key to digital transformation. This includes everything we know about ourselves as organization, as well as the history of where we have come from that has brought us to this place. The leaders, the insiders, the outsiders, employees, customer data, all we know must guide us to take on the new challenges that face us ahead.

But This Is Your Fight
Ray was given everything she needed, but she still has to execute based on that knowledge. Technology, resources, and strategy are not enough to save you. Organizations going through digital transformation sometimes focus on buying solutions or having the right plan or assets. This is not enough, you must fight to implement, integrate, and execute with your technology and digital transformation plans.

Catch Your Breath and Start Running
In the trailer, as Ray is hearing that she has been given everything she needs, she breathes deep, gathers herself and then starts running. This is exactly what brands need to do. It doesn’t show why she is running or what is chasing her, but she isn’t running to get away from something, she is actually getting up to speed because a fighter is coming at her fast. This is change, this is your customer, this is the new speed of business. Start running. Is your organization up to speed. Many brands are standing still operating as they always have. Businesses need to start running to increase business agility because the velocity of change coming at them is very high.

Don’t be Chased
Ray is running and then you see the fighter coming fast and then she flips up in the air to land on the fighter in epic fashion. This is why getting up to speed to the new reality of disruption, competition, and change so you stop being chased by it and instead take control of it and ride it. As organizations focus on speed, agility, and fluidness they do the impossible, they stop getting ran over by change they dominate it. The backflip is the perfect visual for what happens when brands nail digital transformation. What was once an enemy becomes a competitive advantage. Change runs over the laggards, but rewards the ones that up to speed.

They Will Always Be With You
The last part of the trailer shows that your allies and your enemies will always be with you. It isn’t something you defeat once and for all. Digital transformation is an ongoing thing, not a one-time execution. Overcoming your enemy is not the goal, the capability to overcome your enemy is what is valuable. This will always be with you. This is the true goal of digital transformation, the capability to utilize innovation, technology, and organizational agility to handle anything that comes at you.
